Can you tell me more about your online behavioral classes?
These classes teach how to work through anxious and reactive behavior using a 'base training method' for behavior modification. Base training establishes functional skills and systematically integrates them into challenging situations — like building blocks you can break down when your dog struggles, or build up when your dog shows focus and confidence. The four pillars are Mat Work, Heel Work, Recall and Send Away, with Mat Work being the best starting point.
What is the structure of online Classes?
Classes are offered 'on-demand,' so you can start at your earliest convenience. Weekly training discussions and demonstrations can be watched on your schedule. Your 'Get Started' email arrives the day you sign up, and Week 1 training arrives the following day.
How do online classes compare to in-person classes?
Training at home allows both people and dogs to focus and process information more effectively — especially for dogs exhibiting anxious, reactive or hyperactive behavior. In-person classes can overwhelm dogs struggling with triggers like other dogs, people, sounds or car rides. Online training lets you use your living room as a classroom and weave newly learned skills into your individual routine and environment.
What if I have questions?
Submit questions for Office Hours, held live every Wednesday at 12pm PST. If you're unable to attend the live discussion, you can still submit questions and receive the replay.
How long will it take to make progress in training?
Behavioral training is a process designed to lower the stress and arousal fueling anxious, reactive or hyperactive behavior — more like using a dimmer than flipping a switch. Work through the classes comprehensively: Mat Work, then Heel Work, Recall and Send Away. Timelines depend on your dog's age, your commitment to the protocol, and the intensity of the behavior.
What is Mat Work?
Mat Work establishes calming or relaxation exercises in low-stress, low-distraction environments. The training mat becomes a safety cue that promotes calm, focused connection — useful for teaching calmness with guests, with resident animals, reducing sound sensitivity, helping relaxation at the vet or during travel, and addressing hyperactivity like jumping and biting.
What is Heel Work?
Heel Work teaches your dog to station at your side. Once established, you can use it in situations where your dog might be nervous, reactive or hyperactive indoors or on walks. This calming strategy builds on Mat Work, promoting a calm connection when triggers are present.
What is Recall?
Recall means teaching your dog to 'come' when called. This class establishes rock-solid recall and shows you how to use it to call your dog away from window barking, fence-line barking or running. Mat Work and Heel Work are recommended prerequisites.
What training tools do I need?
Visit the 'Shop' link in the main navigation for products that optimize your training. Key items include training food, a training mat, a front-clip harness, a training pouch and a six-foot leash. Helpful additions include exercise pens, baby gates, water bowls, and chewies for puppies.
